Peter Schaft is the current section leader for the FSR in Naviga. We met up with Peter for a quick interview:
Name: Peter Schaft Country: Netherlands
When did you get started with model boats: Probably when I was about 5-6 years old, I remember having a freight ship with a clock-work engine (turn a key to wind up a spring) and I was always doing various model boats growing up. Later, in 1977, I got into model speed boats, racing FSR-V boats (multi), first in Netherlands and then after a few years I also started to do international races. Then I started in Naviga, my first assignment was as a judge on the pontoon at the WC in Schrems, Austria in 1990. In 1995 I took over as FSR section leader from Torbjoern Andresen.
What made you start with this hobby: I grew up with model boats around me and I just always was involved with model boats. I later also co-founded our local model boat club in Alkmaar, Holland. By the way, Alkmaar used to be the cheese capitol in Holland, but now it is the boating capitol... :-)
What is your best competition result: This is a great sport with many good racers, I have been very pleased to come home with a top three position from international races earlier. Now as the Naviga section leader I am not allowed to take part in races sanctioned by Naviga.
If you could only participate in one more race in your life, which one: I have very good memories from the yearly race that the club in Bad Emst by Limburg (Germany) used to put on. The race was by the Lorelei cliff in a very nice place. In addition to being a very nice competition, it was always held in the beginning of September coinciding with the start of the wine season...
What would you be doing if not model speed boats: Model Speed Boats....I love this sport!
